Symantec Endpoint Protection - Mac Installation Instructions

Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 12.1.4 focuses on Mac, and brings to the Symantec Endpoint Protection Mac client many new Mac-specific features and improvements, including support for Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, intrusion prevention, and enhancements to content update and scanning. Download Symantec Endpoint Protection 14 for Mac free standalone setup. Symantec Endpoint Protection supports all common operating systems such as Windows, Linux and Mac, however the following paragraph will cover the requirements for Windows platforms only.

If you need to install an antivirus solution, download Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP). You will need to log in with your LLNL Official Username (OUN) and One-Time Password (OTP). Locate the 'Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) - Home Use' section and click the 'OS X' button.

  1. Copy the downloaded file to the desktop of the Mac computer. The file may be named Symantec Endpoint Protection.zip or Symantec_Endpoint_Protection_14.3.0_RU1_Mac_Client_EN.zip, where version is the product version.
  2. Right-click Open With > Archive Utility to extract the file's contents.
  3. Open the resulting folder. You then install the Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Mac.

The resulting virtual disk image or folder contains the application installer and a folder called Additional Resources. Both items must be present in the same location for a successful installation. If you copy the installer to another location, you must also copy Additional Resources.
To install the Symantec Endpoint Protection client for Mac:

  1. Double-click Install Symantec Endpoint Protection.
  2. To begin the installation, click Install.
  3. To install a helper tool that is needed for installing the Symantec Endpoint Protection client, enter your Mac's administrative username and password, and then click Install Helper.
  4. After the installation, click Continue to finish setting up your Symantec Endpoint Protection client.
  5. To set up your Symantec Endpoint Protection client, take the following steps:
  6. Authorize the Symantec Endpoint Protection system extension. In the Security & Privacy dialog box, on the General tab, at System software from application 'Symantec Endpoint Protection' was blocked from loading, click Allow.
    If needed, click the lock icon to make the changes. You must authorize the system extension for Symantec Endpoint Protection to fully function.
    About authorizing system extensions for Symantec Endpoint Protection for macOS 10.15 or later
    Allow full disk access. In the Security & Privacy dialog box, on the Privacy tab, make sure Symantec System Extension is allowed to access data and administrative settings for all users on your Mac device.
    If needed, click the lock icon to make the changes.
    Allow changes to network profile When prompted Symantec Endpoint Protection would like to filter network content, click Allow.
  7. Click Complete.

Supported Product

Symantec Endpoint Protection is recommended for use at the University. It checks hard drives, removable media, and email attachments for known computer viruses and removes any that it finds, including macro viruses. It also monitor yours computer and notify you of any infection attempts. Symantec Endpoint Protection is site licensed at Penn and available free of charge to members of the Penn community.

Licensing

Symantec Endpoint Protection Download Mac Software

The University of Pennsylvania owns the Symantec Endpoint Protection license.

Students may install Symantec Endpoint Protection on their personal computers.

Faculty and staff may install Symantec Endpoint Protection on their University-owned systems. Also, faculty and staff may install the software on a single personal computer in accordance with the terms of the retail license agreement.

Please note that Symantec Endpoint Protection is not yet fully compatible with Macintoshes using Apple Silicon (M1) processors. Symantec expects to release an Apple Silicon-compatible version of SEP in spring of 2021.

Before you download

Some Schools and Centers manage Symantec's Windows updates via their own network servers. That is, the School or Center will control, monitor, and update the virus updates on your machine from their network server. Faculty and staff should speak with their Local Support Provider (LSP) to determine how their virus updates will be managed.
The software available from this page is configured so that virus update files are managed directly from Symantec's web site. With the exception of faculty and staff, this configuration should suffice for most users.

Step 1 - Remove existing antivirus software
If you already have antivirus software installed on your computer, such as VirusScan for Windows, you should remove it before installing Symantec's antivirus products. Windows users must also remove earlier versions of Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Endpoint Protection, before installing the current version of Symantec Endpoint Protection.
Step 2 - Download antivirus software
Symantec's antivirus products are available for download using your PennKey and password. Before the software will download to your machine, you will need to agree to the licensing agreement.

After you accept the licensing agreement, in the 'Save As' window, create or go to the directory in which you want to save the file, append .exe to the file name if it is not already there, and click 'Save'. Open this directory, double-click the installation file, and follow the on-screen instructions accepting the defaults. After you finish, you can delete the installation file.
Note: Internet Explorer users may need to append .exe to the filename after downloading Symantec Endpoint Protection to the desktop.
Step 3 - Update now!
If you installed the software as instructed in step 2, it should have automatically run LiveUpdate to get the latest virus update files. If not, run LiveUpdate immediately after installation.
Step 4 - Scan your computer for viruses
Symantec Endpoint Protection's realtime autoprotection has been enabled to check for viruses daily.
Step 5 - Keep your antivirus definitions up-to-date
In case of a virus emergency, you'll want to run LiveUpdate manually to get the latest virus protection and to keep your virus definitions up-to-date.

Step 6 - Delete viruses from Quarantine
You can delete infected files from the Quarantine.

The software available from this page is configured so that virus update files are managed directly from Symantec's web site. This configuration should suffice for most users. Please note that Symantec Endpoint Protection currently only works on Intel-based Macs; Symantec expects an M1-compatible version in Spring of 2021.
