Smith And Wesson Revolver Serial Number Database

Partnership with Horace Smith & Daniel B. Wesson was from 1856–1874. Family owned by the Wesson Family from 1874–1965. Smith & Wesson became a subsidiary of Bangor-Punta from 1965–1983. Between 1983–1987, Smith & Wesson was owned by the Lear Siegler Co. On May 22, 1987, it was sold to R.L.Tomkins, a British holding company. Dating a Smith & Wesson Revolver: This list is merely a general guide and not meant to be exact. There is some dispute regarding the dates on some serial numbers. Your gun may actually be a year off from what is listed. The precise shipping date as 'lettered' can be several years off depending on model.

Where can I find a list telling the manufacture date for the serial number on a S&W model 36 Chief Special?

other than that, ive heard its hard to date a s+w exactly due to them using a strange numbering system. dont know for sure if its true or not.

Huntingguy, that sounds good. Do you have the number you called?
I have mine and my uncles mod 36. I know when I bought mine and I have a vague idea of when my uncle bought his. He's dead now so I can't ask.
How did you find the number if you don't still have it?
If all else fails I will join and seek the info on the S&W site above.

The number is from the link above. I am pretty sure that is the one I called. I had an early J frame I wanted to convert to a 32HR so I called.. It is possible I got in contact with the custom shop.. (No they wouldn't convert it..)

Thanks huntinguy, I'll call them monday.
Why don't you reline the barrel and make a new cylinder???
My dad had a S&W .32 kit gun with a 4' barrel. The kit gun is a J frame. You may be able to find a kit gun with a snub barrel or you could snub it yourself.
I ended up with dads guns and gave the kit gun to my sister.

It is the same gun as you mentioned but with a three inch barrel. The gun is perfect, not even a wear mark. Maybe it has 100 rounds through it.
My daughter (13) shot it a few times then it went back to its owner. I thought it was going to stay with me, that is when I called Smith. I just wanted a little more power out of it.
I really like the 32. great kids gun, makes bigger holes than a 22. impresses the kids more.
Quick NavigationNumber
  1. May 1, 2006 - Can anyone point me to a website or other source that would allow me to determine the year of manufacture of a.32 S&W Regulation Police.
  2. Smith wesson serial numbers database. Blue Book of Gun Values - SMITH & WESSON. This led to the imperial government cancelling the order for significant.
  3. Locate either 'Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Massachusetts' or 'Smith & Wesson; Houlton, ME' stamped on the barrel. This identification proves that the handgun is an authentic Smith & Wesson pistol. Locate the serial number on the left side of the pistol's frame.

How to Identify/Date a S&W. Discussion in 'Firearms' started by Pilgrim, Jun 5, 2009. This is where to look for the model number (not used until around 1957). Sometimes the serial number is here, especially in later models. Serial# is N82XXX. I called Smith when I first bought it used. They said it was made in 1981.

Smith and Wesson serial number
Hey folks,
In the divorce and move, I've misplaced my Smith & Wesson book that gave serial numbers. IF anyone out there has one - the Roy Jinks book - help me with one.
It's an old 5 screw model - 32 Long caliber. The last date on the barrel is Dec 22, 1914. The number behind the crane is 44480 and the number on the butt is 326575.
Some one let me know if you've got a few minutes to spare.
Thanks,
Mark

S&W .32 Long Hand Ejector
Mark,
The 'Standard Catalog of Smith&Wesson' lists your revolver as a .32 Hand Ejector, Third Model. With serial number 326575 on the butt it fall within being made from 1911-1942. Built on the round butt I frame with five screws. Yours should have a heat-treated cylinder. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much - I was guessing 1924, so I was close.
Mark

New Model Number Three

Always interested in perfecting Model 3 revolver D.B. Wesson redesigned and improved old Model 3 in hopes of attracting more sales. Russian contracts were almost filled, so the company decided to devote the effort necessary to improve on this design. In 1877, this project was undertaken. Extractor housing was shortened; cylinder retention system was improved; shape of grip was changed to a more streamlined and attractive configuration. This New Model was available with a 3.5', 4', 5', 6', 6.5', 7', 7.5' or 8' barrel length, with 6-shot fluted cylinder. The 6.5' barrel and .44 S&W Russian chambering is the most often encountered variation of this model, but the factory considered the 3.5' and 8' barrels as standard and these were kept in stock as well. New Model No. 3 was also chambered for .32 S&W, .32-44 S&W, .320 S&W Rev. Rifle, .38 S&W, .38-40, .38-44 S&W, .38 US (.38 Colt), .41 S&W, .44 Henry rimfire, .44 S&W American, .44-40, .45 S&W Schofield, .450 Rev., .45 Webley, .455 MkI and .455 MkII. They are blued or nickel-plated and have checkered hard rubber grips, with S&W logo molded into them, or walnut grips. There are many sub-variations within this model designation and the potential collector should secure detailed reference material that deals with this model. Approximately 35,796 of these revolvers manufactured between 1878 and 1912. Nearly 40 percent were exported to fill contracts with Japan, Australia, Argentina, England, Spain and Cuba. There were some sent to Asia, as well. Proof marks or military marks of these countries or factory shipping records will establish their provenance.Variations of the New Mod. No. 3 include: Maryland Militia – US, HN, and DAL markings – 200 made – maybe double standard value; Revenue Cutter Service – US purchase, no special markings, i.d. by serial number – 50% premium; Turkish Model – .44 Henry Rimfire; P, U, & AFC markings, own s/n range 1-5461 – 50% to 100% premium; Japanese Navy – usually with Anchor marking – possible slight premium; Japanese Artillery – Japanese kanji on ejector housing – 25% to 50% premium; Argentine Model – marked EJERCITO ARGENTNO, 2,000 made – 50% to 100% premium; Australian Colonial Police with detachable shoulder stock – double value if stock included; Unusual configurations – rare barrel lengths, rare calibers, and special order sights all add to the value of a gun, depending on the rarity of the variation. Related models – several models shared the same configuration but were offered as distinct models in their own serial number ranges. Their listings follow this one and include: New Model No. 3 Target Model; New Model No. 3 Frontier Model; New Mod. No. 3 38 Winchester Model; Revolving Rifle – based on New Mod. No. 3 frame
