Q. Why run Autodesk Revit on a Macbook Pro?

Answer: I like the MacBook Pro hardware, which is the main reason why I also want to run my primary professional applications on it. In fact, I 'run' Revit on my MacBook Air as well; read on..

Revit using Bootcamp

As many have known for years, for running Revit natively on Mac hardware, booting directly in to a Windows partition is the best in terms of performance. That is to be expected as you are simply using the Mac hardware as a high end PC. You however give up the Mac OS X goodness in doing so.

Revit using Virtual Machines

My article will focus on this section as I have done some research on the subject, and have results to share. My users 'need' to use Macbook Pro while traveling (for some Mac native apps) and also have to run design software (AutoCAD & Revit).

First thing to consider is the specs of the MBP you would select for this purpose.

I recommend buying the 15” MBP with a 'Discrete Graphics' card.

These models also have larger L3 cache, and Revit performance is sensitive to its size. You will also take advantage of the better specs running Revit using Bootcamp.

For our virtualization setup, I went with VMware Fusion over Parallels due to a slight edge in graphics performance.

Hardware considerations:

  1. Max out the RAM to 16GB when ordering the MBP
  2. Get the MacBook Pro with discrete video card - only available on 15” models with the Radeon R9 (2GB vRAM)
  3. For models with IG (integrated graphics), do consider the fact that the Video RAM will be taken out from the physical RAM. So, if you allocate 8GB RAM to the Virtual Machine, plus 1GB Video RAM, you have effectively taken away 9GB from the 16GB RAM (leaving only 7GB for the Mac OSX side!)

Virtual Machine settings:

  1. Allocate only 2 CPUs to the VM (For the most part, Revit only utilizes a single processing core at a time, though there are some tasks where multiple cores could be utilized).
  2. Allocate a max 50% RAM to the VM (8GB, if physical RAM is 16GB)
  3. Similarly, allocate a max 50% Video RAM to the VM
  4. For running 3D programs in the virtual environment, use DirectX (10 or 9) from the 3D acceleration menu, and install the VM Tools in Windows OS.

Autodesk For Mac

Revit in the cloud (accessed via web browser)

Download

Using Fra.me technology, you could access any Windows application running in the cloud from multitude of devices capable of running a modern browser.

The download speeds were amazing, since data exchange is directly between Frame and Autodesk servers. I was able to install Revit 2017 (without the Medium Material Library) in under 6 minutes!

Fra.me utilizes virtualization technology in the cloud and the VM's are running Windows Server 2012 R2.

My verdict after a quick trial - it's very doable, if you are well served by a high speed connection.

Do a trial, and when you are ready, do pick a pricing plan which allows for GPU usage to run Revit.

Run Revit using Remote Desktop (RDP)

Revit

This is a best option for me since I love to travel light. I just carry my MacBook Air and use the Microsoft provided 'app' Remote Desktop. If the wireless connectivity is sufficient, I can easily remote into my workstation and utilize the Revit installation remotely. Since I have the office VPN setup, I can do the same when outside the office.

Do remember to carry at least a standard two button wheel mouse, no matter which option you pick for running Revit on a MacBook Pro!

In all of the above scenarios, consider the licensing costs. Both Windows OS and Revit license will be needed in Bootcamp, VM and Fra.me options.

The RDP option will not consume any extra licenses.. Best of Luck!

Revit For Mac Student

The wait is finally over for all you Mac and Revit users thanks to Frame. No more Bootcamp, Parallels or switching between a PC and Mac, well, yes, but no. Autodesk don’t have a Revit for Mac version but there is an application called Frame that it can run through and Autodesk have certified it for Revit and AutoCAD.

“Frame: Run any software in a browser” is a cloud based application.

So by the look s of it, it seems pretty straightforward and costs anywhere from $10 – $25 a month plus additional charges for usage above the allocated credits. Click here for a test drive.

Everyone involved in design business is aware of the limitations that software packages impose when it comes to using your daily programs for work. In case of Windows and OS X you might experience some difficulties with choosing the right software for your computer and installing the right set of programs for successful operation.

As many of you know, you can’t just use Autodesk Revit on your OS X. You can surely use it on Windows, but what if you’ve bought a nice MacBook Pro and you need to carry on working with this program? How do you solve this problem?

There are two major ways how to tackle this challenge and download Autodesk Revit on your MacBook:

  • Installation of fully functional Windows through Boot Camp
  • Installation of virtual machine designed for OS X

In this article I am going to review these two methods and provide my personal feedback on both of them. My goal is to ensure that you fully understand the pros and cons of opting for either of these methods.

Installation Of Fully Functional Windows Through Boot Camp

Basically, in this case we are going to use Apple hardware as a system block, which is going to store your Windows system. In order to do so, you have to download OS X (it’s convenient and quite easy) and then create a volume on your hard drive for successful installation of Windows through the Boot Camp program (personally, I installed Windows 8).

I was amazed by the Apple support after I discovered that all drivers are automatically downloaded through the single installer. The hardware is fully operational after this procedure, which is fantastic. Sony, with its pre-installed Windows, is a far cry from this service (there is quite a lot of unnecessary stuff for Windows 8 that makes it difficult for computers to work in the right way).

Once we are finished with it, we have an ordinary computer with Windows as the main operation system. I have installed Autodesk Revit on MacBook Pro without any problems.

Starting Autodesk Revit From OS X Through The Virtual Machine Parallels Desktop

This option is only available in case you start the program on OS X (you also have to download this virtual machine). Basically, you just start the program as an app on OS X.

On balance, this option isn’t that difficult either. First of all, you download Parallels Desktop and Windows (which is basically incorporated into your Parallels Desktop program). Afterwards, you just install Autodesk Revit and you’re ready to go. I haven’t come across any problems here and Revit functions really well.

There is only one limitation imposed by virtual machines – limited resources for full-scale operation and relatively low operating speed. Due to the fact that Windows in this case serves as an app on OS X, it doesn’t have the power of the whole computer to process and work faster. For an instance, the graphics card in this case operates indirectly through the soft getaway. Internal memory is divided between OS X and Windows.

However, Autodesk Revit is fully functional under these conditions, which is why you can still work with simple models using this method.

How To Install Autodesk Revit On Mac OS?

What should I choose?

Windows through Boot Camp:

It is clearly the best way to work with Revit in a secure and fast way without any problems. If you come across any difficulties in this case, it is probably due to the lack of skills required to work with the Apple software. I chose this method.

  • + great hardware (reliable, powerful configuration, variety of accessories, different things that come along with it)
  • + overall operating speed
  • + stability
  • + high quality screen
  • – impossible to use integrated graphics
  • – different keyboard
  • – irregular screen resolution

Parallels Desktop on OS X:

If you are a devoted fan of Apple, maybe this option could work for you. However, you can expect to have more problems. Although, if you use Revit on occasions or as a back-up plan, this option could be brilliant for you.

Autodesk Revit 2017 Download Free

  • + operating speed and the convenience of OS X interface
  • + possibility of integrated graphics to be used (as long as other hard apps are not active)
  • – low operating speed of the virtual machine
  • – the absence of many common apps
  • – potential problems you can encounter if you need to use Windows for active and serious work

To sum up

Revit For Macintosh

I am glad I have switched to MacBook. The speed, absence of lags and the presence of other outstanding features make my work on Mac pleasurable and worth my time. There is an evident drawback here, however, which is mainly associated with equipment costs.

Also, I find OS X particularly interesting because I get to enjoy many things that we don’t have on Windows.
